Don't get me wrong. I love that more people are thinking about research. But there's a problem brewing in our field, and it's starting to smell like day-old coffee in the office kitchen. We're conflating visibility with expertise, mistaking jargon for depth, and turning genuine research insights into clickbait wisdom.

The result? A lot of noise that makes it harder to recognize actual expertise when we see it. And trust me, in a field where bad research can lead to products that make users want to throw their phones across the room, this matters more than you think.

So let's talk about what real UX research expertise actually looks like. Spoiler alert: it's way more nuanced than mastering the perfect interview script.

The Myth: Expertise Equals Mastery of Methods

They can run a guerrilla usability test in a coffee shop that yields more actionable insights than a perfectly controlled lab study that takes three weeks to schedule.

Strategic Business Acumen is where things get interesting. Expert researchers don't just understand users; they understand how user insights map to business metrics, monetization strategies, and OKRs. They can walk into a meeting and explain why improving checkout flow completion rates by 15% is worth two weeks of engineering time. They speak fluent "business case" alongside "user needs."

Product Thinking means seeing the bigger picture. These researchers understand product roadmaps, MVP scoping, and the eternal tradeoffs between user needs and technical constraints. Execution Realism is probably my favorite dimension because it separates the dreamers from the doers. Expert researchers know how to deliver insights under real-world constraints. They're scrappy, practical, and fast when they need to be. They can pivot from a comprehensive research plan to a quick-and-dirty solution when priorities shift (and priorities always shift). They understand that sometimes "good enough today" beats "perfect next quarter."

Communication and Influence is where a lot of otherwise talented researchers stumble. It's not enough to have great insights; you need to translate those insights into decisions, not just decks. Expert researchers know their audience. They present differently to engineers than to executives. They focus on recommendations, not just findings. They can turn a 40-slide research presentation into a five-minute conversation that changes product direction.

System-Level Thinking takes it up another notch. These researchers understand not just users, but organizational dynamics, team incentives, and workflows. They know why that perfectly logical recommendation isn't getting implemented (hint: it's probably because it would require three different teams to coordinate, and nobody has time for that). They design their research approach with implementation in mind.

Ethical Judgment and Empathy rounds it out. Expert researchers understand user agency, systemic harm, and bias—both in their research methods and in the products they're helping build. They can spot when research might be used to manipulate rather than serve users. They think about who's not in their research sample and why that matters.

You Don't Have to Master All of Them (But Know Where You Stand)

Partner with product managers or business analysts who complement your skills. Maybe you're a communication wizard who can influence stakeholders but needs to level up on execution realism. Find mentors or collaborators who can help you get more scrappy.

The worst thing you can do is pretend you're strong everywhere when you're not. Teams can smell research BS from a mile away, and once you lose credibility, it's incredibly hard to get back.

How to Spot (or Fake) Expertise

Speaking of BS, let's talk about how to identify real expertise versus performance art. Because yes, some people are really good at faking it, and some genuinely expert researchers are terrible at showcasing their skills.

Red flags are usually pretty obvious once you know what to look for. If someone only talks about methods and never mentions outcomes, that's a problem. If their critiques of other research never consider feasibility or business impact, they're probably more academic than practical. If they use "users say" to justify vague takes without any actual research behind it, run.

Green flags are more subtle but way more valuable. Look for people who ask good, contextual questions about your specific situation rather than offering generic advice. Pay attention to researchers who frame their work in terms of business value or product bets, not just user insights. Notice who talks about tradeoffs and constraints rather than ideal solutions.

And here's a bonus green flag that took me years to appreciate: true experts don't pretend to have certainty when they don't. They reason in probabilities and tradeoffs. They say things like "based on what we know now" and "this research suggests" rather than "users definitely want this." They're comfortable with ambiguity because they understand that research informs decisions; it doesn't make them for you.

Why This Matters for the Field

You might be thinking, "Okay, this is all interesting, but why should I care about policing expertise in UX research?" Fair question. Here's why it matters: shallow takes are diluting the credibility of our entire field.

When everyone claims to be a research expert, it becomes harder for actual expertise to stand out. When people conflate running a survey with understanding user behavior, hiring managers start to think any designer can do research. When we overemphasize "research theater"—methods performed for show rather than impact—we weaken our collective ability to influence product decisions.

I've seen too many companies where research is treated as a nice-to-have rather than a strategic necessity. Where researchers are brought in to validate decisions that have already been made. Where "user-centered design" becomes a buzzword rather than a practice.

Real expertise drives strategy, not just slide decks. It influences roadmaps, not just personas. It changes products, not just processes. And the more we can recognize and cultivate that kind of expertise, the better our field becomes.
